Associate Teaching P-8

Thaine Sugden (former AT, current Lead Teacher)

What drew me to Sacred Heart and the AT program was the chance to put my toe in the water and test it out.
Sacred Heart’s Associate Teacher (AT) program is an exciting, invaluable apprenticeship opportunity for early career teachers in our P-8 program. Designed as a two-year commitment, ATs are full-time teachers immersed in the classroom to learn all aspects of teaching to prepare them to effectively lead their own classroom, here or elsewhere.

Through a mutually beneficial relationship, ATs learn best practices from our veteran, mentor teachers while enriching the classroom with energy and new perspectives. Our ATs bring a breadth of experiences, including coaching, tutoring, leading musical theater, running after-school programs, teaching abroad, and beyond. They include career changers (from fields such as finance, technology, marketing), recent college graduates, and evening graduate students. All share an enthusiasm for working with students, curiosity about teaching, and commitment to learning.

To support their professional growth, ATs will receive hands-on teaching opportunities, mentorship from their lead teacher(s), and supportive coaching. ATs have the unique opportunity to work with teachers in all domains across a departmentalized Lower School setting.

Sacred Heart is committed to supporting ATs enrolled, exploring, or planning to enroll in Masters or credential programs through our robust professional development opportunities.
