GR K-8 Visual Arts Program

The goal of the lower and middle schools' Visual Arts program is to develop in students an understanding and enjoyment of art, craft, and design.

Under the guidance of a dedicated studio arts teacher, students use a wide variety of tools and techniques to explore work in two and three dimensions, experimenting with printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, drawing, painting, and textiles. Throughout, students will explore a range of historical artists, as well as contemporary art in the local community, developing visual literacy through ongoing discussion about their own work and that of others.

In grade 8, students have the option to further expand their range, context, and hands-on experimentation through the GR 8 Mural Painting elective course, in which the medium of large-scale mural technique and storytelling is emphasized.

  • Digital Arts

Using state-of-the-art technology, students explore digital arts in Fundamentals of Design and Images in Motion, and Documentary and Narrative Filmmaking. Students participate in imaginative projects that engage their creativity through various activities and software programs. Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, drawing and sculpting apps for the iPad, and digital video production are integral components of the digital arts program at SHP.
  • Photography

Providing an overall knowledge of both the aesthetic and technical aspects of the medium, foundational courses emphasize processes and techniques of shooting and developing 35mm film, printing contact sheets and making photographic enlargements. A variety of photographic styles and traditions are examined, including surrealism, photomontage, social documentary, portraiture, and alternative processes.
  • Studio Art

Courses in studio art encompass drawing, painting, printmaking, and ceramics. Students may continue in advanced levels of any of these courses, including AP Studio Art. The visual arts teachers encourage exploration, experimentation, discovery and building technical ability. The art studio is a safe place for students to express themselves, problem-solve, and gain confidence as an artistic individual.
