Prep report: League water polo showdowns on the horizon

With a 13-7 victory over Valley Christian, the Varsity Boys Water Polo team clinched the WCAL regular-season title, while the Girls, who defeated Valley Christian 9-2, will play St. Francis next Wednesday (6PM) to determine their WCAL regaular-season champion.
Boys Water Polo Will Riley scored four goals and recorded three steals to help Sacred Heart Prep beat host Valley Christian, 13-7, and clinch the regular-season West Catholic Athletic League title.
With one league game remaining, against visiting St. Francis at 6:30 p.m. next Wednesday, the Gators (10-1, 5-0) are the only undefeated team left in the WCAL.
Sam Untrecht scored 10 goals for Menlo. SHP, along with Bellarmine, compete at the S&R Tournament in Irvine beginning Friday. The Gators are scheduled to meet host Irvine at 1:15 p.m. and will play again at 5:35 p.m. regradless of the outcome against either Coronado or Los Alamitos. It's the first of three tournaments involving Sacred Heart Prep before the WCAL playoffs begin Monday, Oct. 22.
Valley Christian (12-4, 3-1) drew within 5-4 of the Gators with 5:47 remaining to play in the third period before consecutive goals from Stanford commits Andrew Churukian and Larsen Weigle over the next 42 seconds gave SHP some breathing room.
Weigle and Churukian each scored three goals, with Churukian adding three steals and Weigle recording a pair.
Girls Water Polo
Sisters Annabel Facey and Eleanor Facey split six goals down the middle and Sacred Heart Prep beat visiting Valley Christian, 9-2, in a West Catholic Athletic League match Wednesday.
Ella Woodhead added a pair for the Gators (12-5, 4-0), who host St. Francis (6-5, 4-0)next Wednesday at 6 p.m. with the regular season title on the line. Both teams have a bye in the final week of league play.
The Gators won the regular-season title last year but the Lancers came back to win the WCAL tournament title.
Sacred Heart Prep scored the game's first seven goals and held the Warriors scoreless the first 17:14 of the contest.
Eleanor Facey drew three exclusions and recorded a pair of steals for the Gators. Goalies Nellie McAdams (10) and Megan Norris (5) each allowed one goal while combing for 15 saves. Bella Bachler also scored for the Gators.
