The high school postseason gets a jumpstart this week with water polo playoffs in the Peninsula Athletic League, Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and West Catholic Athletic League on tap along with girls' golf tournaments in the West Bay Athletic League, PAL and Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
The PAL completes its girls' tennis schedule Tuesday and then opens the league tournament Wednesday. Menlo-Atherton, which travels to Half Moon Bay on Tuesday, has already clinched the Bay Division and is already qualified for the Central Coast Section tournament.
Woodside, which hosts South San Francisco on Tuesday, clinched the PAL Ocean Division and will play at Carlmont on Wednesday with a chance at gaining the second automatic berth into the CCS. A loss does not eliminate the Wildcats from consideration as an at-large team.
The Glen Kovacs PAL boys' water polo tournament began Monday with a play-in game between Sequoia, the Ocean Division's second-place team, and Hillsdale, the seventh-place team from the Bay Division. That winner plays at top-seeded and regular-season champion Menlo School (17-6) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Second-seeded Menlo-Atherton (10-12) and third-seeded Woodside (15-6) also play at Menlo on Tuesday. The Bears play Half Moon Bay (7-12) at 2:45 p.m. and the Wildcats meet Burlingame (10-11) at 4 p.m.
The semifinals are scheduled for Woodside on Thursday, with games beginning at 2:45 p.m. M-A hosts the championships Saturday, with games starting at 9:15 a.m. The title match is slated for 4:45 p.m.
The PAL girls' water polo tournament also opened Monday with a play-in game between Burlingame and Carlmont. The winner meets top-seeded and regular-season champion Castilleja (18-6) at Woodside on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Second-seeded Menlo School (17-9) meets Notre Dame Belmont at 2:45 p.m. and fifth-seeded M-A (6-12) plays Aragon at 4 p.m., also at Woodside.
The semifinals are slated for Thursday at Menlo School, with games beginning at 2:45 p.m. M-A hosts the final round Saturday, with games starting at 8 a.m. The title match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
In the WCAL, both the Sacred Heart Prep girls and boys teams received byes into Thursday's semifinal round to be held at St. Francis with games starting at 4 p.m.
St. Francis hosts the finals on Saturday, with games beginning at 3 p.m.
Palo Alto and Gunn will be participating in the SCVAL tournament, which gets underway Tuesday.
Girls Golf
Palo Alto and Gunn will also be participating in the SCVAL golf tournament at Santa Teresa Golf Course on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The Vikings went undefeated during league play. Both teams will be playing for a berth in the CCS golf tournament on Oct. 30 in Monterey County.
The recently renovated Baylands Golf Links plays host to the WBAL tournament, also on Wednesday at noon. Harker won the regular-season title while Menlo School was second and Castilleja placed third. Sacred Heart Prep was sixth.
Menlo-Atherton plays in the PAL tournament Tuesday at Poplar Creek Golf Course.
Girls volleyball
Palo Alto, Menlo School and Menlo-Atherton are among a group of teams that will be considered for the Open Division when the CCS holds its seeding meeting on Thursday night.
Sacred Heart Cathedral will likely earn the overall No. 1 seed. WCAL schools Mitty, St. Francis, St. Ignatius and Valley Christian are also likely headed to the Open Division.
Palo Alto (22-4, 10-1), which finishes its De Anza Division regular season Tuesday at Homestead (22-10, 8-3), has a seven-match winning streak.
Los Altos, Homestead and Mountain View are also locks for the CCS tournament, with Monta Vista and Los Gatos likely to join the party.
Gunn (24-11, 11-1) earned at least a share of the SCVAL El Camino Division and would win it outright should Saratoga upset Cupertino on Tuesday.
The Titans have played a competitive schedule and will have enough points to qualify for the CCS tournament.
Woodside (18-13, 7-6) will make it into the tournament regardless of what happens Tuesday against visiting Aragon. Sacred Heart Prep (12-16, 5-4), which reached the state championship match last year, will likely get a bid as well.
