Sacred Heart’s Farm Program Highlighted in The Almanac

The article "Students Learn About the Life Cycle from Campus Farm Animals" showcases how Sacred Heart’s Farm & Garden Program educates students on sustainability and community.

Now in its 18th year, Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton's (SHS) Farm & Garden Program has become a cornerstone of education, sustainability, and community engagement at SHS. An article published this week in The Almanac highlights the program’s evolution from a small club in 2005 to a vibrant outdoor classroom with dozens of farm animals including goats, rabbits, poultry, a tortoise, and a diverse vegetable garden and olive grove.

Guided by Farm & Garden teacher Dr. Stewart Slafter, the program instructs students from preschool through high school about sustainability, agriculture, and the interconnectedness of nature. Through hands-on lessons, students explore the life cycles of plants and animals, gaining valuable insights into the natural world.

The program’s impact extends beyond the classroom. Sacred Heart’s farm produces fresh vegetables and eggs, which are sold at the school’s farmers market and shared with volunteers. In addition, students participate in a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, delivering fresh produce to local families each week, as well as to the school's cafeteria as part of its farm to table initiative.

The Almanac article celebrates how the program fosters both environmental awareness and community connections, offering students practical knowledge of sustainable practices.
