Despite numerous injuries, the Varsity Girls Basketball team is off to an impressive 8-3 start. The Girls are back in action this afternoon in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament at Eastside Prep. Tip is at 3PM.
The SHP Football Team finished 11-2 on the season, and 4-1 in the PAL Bay Division. Six Gators were named to the PAL All-League team, while Head Coach Mark Grieb was the recipient of the PAL Co-Coach of the Year Award.
With his selection to the AP All-America 1st team, SHP grad Ben Burr-Kirven (2015) has now been named to 4 All-America teams (Pro Football Focus, Bleacher Report, ESPN, and the AP), and won both the Pac 12 Defensive Player of the Year, and the Pac 12 Football Scholar Athlete of the Year.
The 20-year-old Davidson, a junior at Stanford University, attended the U.S. WNT’s annual January training camp in Los Angeles, and then at age 19, earned her first senior team cap, starting and playing the full 90 minutes in the USA’s first match of the year, a 5-1 victory against Denmark in which she picked up the game-winning assist on a goal by Julie Ertz. She was the third teenager since 2013 to earn a first cap for the WNT.
SHP grad Ben Burr-Kirven became the first player in Pac 12 history to win both the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year Award and the Pat Tillman Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year award, in the same season.
The annual high school, all-league football teams are being released this week. The West Catholic Athletic League teams released its list Monday, while the Peninsula Athletic League announced its all-league selections Tuesday. Head coach Mark Grieb, RB/LB John Willard, and K/DB Ronan Donnelly were amongst those receiving awards.
Senior Larsen Weigle was named the 2018 CCS Water Polo Player of the Year. Weigle scored 93 goals on the season and had 11 assists while leading the Gators to a 26-2 overall record. Teammates Andrew Churukian, Walker Seymour, and Griffin Price joined Weigle on the 1st team, while Will Riley (2nd Team), and Kyle Ballack (Honorable Mention) were also honored.
Sophomore Megan Norris (Girls Basketball) was named to the San Mateo Daily Journal's Honor Roll thanks to her performances throughout the Kelly Shea-Gallo Memorial Tournament. Norris led the girls to a 2-1 record in the tournament, ultimately falling to St. Francis in the championship game.
The Girls will be back in action this Thursday against The King's Academy in the King's Academy Holiday Tournament. Tip is at 3:30PM.
It was a doubly disappointing night for Sacred Heart Prep. The brunt of the disappointment came Saturday evening in a stunning 35-34 loss to Aptos in the Central Coast Section Open Division III championship game. Then, later that night, in the CCS Open Division II championship, Valley Christian upset St. Francis 31-30 in overtime, an outcome that knocked SHP out of contention for a CIF Northern California tournament spot and ending the Gators’ season.
The boys and girls soccer teams improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the boys basketball team picked up their 1st win with a 50-33 victory over Mills.

Aptos scored a go-ahead TD in the final minute of the game, and then sealed the victory with an INT. That Gators finished the season with an 11-2 record, and were 4-1 in league play.

SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 has named WASHINGTON senior Ben Burr-Kirven (SHP '15) the football Scholar- Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced today. The award, which is presented in each of the 24 sports the Pac-12 sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes that are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.

A year after finishing 3-7, the SHP Boys Football team is one win away from a CCS Open Division III Championship. The Gators defeated Sacred Heart Cathedral 19-7 in this afternoon's semifinal matchup, and will play Aptos in the finals.

The CCS Open title game against West Catholic Athletic League rival Bellarmine was postponed four times in a span of six days due to poor air quality caused by the Camp Fire near Chico. On Tuesday morning, CIF commissioner Duane Morgan announced a co-championship rather than reschedule the game yet again after the CIF state NorCal playoffs in Clovis were also canceled this past weekend.
Both the Boys and Girls Cross Country teams finished 4th in yesterday's CCS Championships.Luci Lambert paced the Girls team with a 15th place finish, while Max Cluss finished 4th overall for the Boys.
Bellarmine and SHP have never met in the CCS playoffs as the teams have been split between Division I and Division II. But with the advent of the Open Division for the 2017 season, it was only a matter of time before two of the premiere teams in the nation battled for a section crown.

Cate Desler (SHP '18) was a leader offensively and defensively for the Jumbos during her rookie campaign. The outside hitter played in 92 of the Jumbos' 98 sets, and took the court in 25 of the team's 26 matches. She led the team with 2.68 kills per set and in total kills, with 247. The Hillsborough, Calif. native was also the Jumbos leader in service aces, as she finished the season with 41. Defensively she helped as well, turning in 2.27 digs per set, the third most on the team. She also finished with 36 blocks on the year.
Second-seeded Soquel scored four times in the final period to pull away for a 9-7 victory over the Gators in the CCS Open Division Tuesday night in Atherton.
Six Gators finished in the top 20 in the boys’ varsity race last Friday at Crystal Springs, with senior Max Cluss paving the way to earn SHP the boys’ team championship. The next test for the Gators’ depth comes Saturday at the Central Coast Section cross-country championships at Crystal Springs.
Sacred Heart Prep, which beat visiting Stevenson, 5-2, on Monday, plays No. 7 seed St. Ignatius at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco this afternoon at 2PM.

The Gators finished with a 9-1 regular season record, and earned the #2 seed in this weekend's opening round CCS Open Division III game against St. Ignatius.

Ben Burr-Kirven (SHP '15) is the nation's leading tackler (122 total tackles), and was recently named a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award, given to the best defensive player in College Football.
Lindsay Lynch and Isa Robinson made it an all-Gators final at the West Bay Athletic League singles tournament Tuesday.Lynch, who played No. 1 singles most of the year for SHP, downed Robinson, a mainstay at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1, to earn an automatic bid into the Central Coast Section tournament.

Sacred Heart Prep grad Mia Shenk, who missed her senior year due to a knee injury, scored her first career collegiate goal in Penn's 2-0 victory over visiting Brown on Sunday. The victory clinches at least a tie for the Ivy League title.
With SHP's 40-28 vicotry over Terra Nova, the Gators took over sole possession of 2nd place in the PAL-Bay Division. SHP closes out their regular season next week against Menlo in the annual "VALPO Bowl" Under the Lights.

The SHP Cross Country program had a strong performance in yesterday's WBAL Center Meet held at Baylands Park. The boys, paced by individual winner, Max Cluss, finished 1st overall, while the Girls, led by Geena Gibbons, finished 2nd.

This past weekend, the Gators won the North vs. South Challenge, one week after winning the S&R Sport Invitational. The SHP Varsity Girls Water Polo team defeated St. Francis 12-5 on Wednesday evening, clinching the WCAL regular-season title, and earning the #1 seed in the upcoming league tournament. The Varsity Boys also defeated St. Francis by a score of 14-5, and will host the presitgious North vs. South Challenge this weekend.
After taking home the S&R Sport Invitational Tournament Championship this past weekend in Southern California, the Varsity Boys Water Polo team now sits at 14-1 on the season, and 5-0 in WCAL play. The Gators will take on St. Francis tomorrow night at 7PM at SHP.

The Gators are now 4-0 on the season, and will play San Mateo at home next Saturday afternoon.
Senior Girls Water Polo player Nellie McAdams and junior Football player Tevita Moimoi were named Palo Alto Online's Athletes of the Week. McAdams has led the Varsity team to a 6-2 start under the direction of new Head Coach Jaime Frank, while Moimoi has helped the Gator Football team to a 3-0 start.

The Bill Talbert Junior Sportsmanship Awards are presented each year by the USTA and the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Recipients are selected from nominations received from the 17 USTA sections.
