It took a late defensive stand to hold off a late charge and give host Sacred Heart Prep a 15-13 victory over its former PAL Bay Division rival Burlingame in a nonleague game Friday.
The Gators (2-0) lone offensive score came early, when Ronan Donnelly connected on a short field goal in the first quarter.
Jake Davison The Gators defense took over from there, with Jake Davison returning a fumble for a touchdown in the second quarter, giving SHP a 9-0 lead at halftime.
After the Panthers scored early in the fourth quarter, Dante Cacchione returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a 15-7 Gators advantage.
Burlingame scored with 6:26 remaining to play but failed on the two-point try. The Panthers got the ball back two minutes later but SHP forced an incomplete pass on a fourth down.
The Panthers had one more chance with under two minutes left but once again the Gators defense held, clinching the game with a fourth-down sack.
Tommy Barnds intercepted a pass in the end zone to end a Burlingame threat in the first half.
The Gators travel to Saratoga on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
